10th ANNUAL RESORATIVEJUSTICE BANQUETS
Featured Speaker: DR. PIERRE ALLARD
For over thirty years, Dr Pierre Allard has been engaged in building partnership with volunteers and in the spiritual sustenance of prisoners. His work has placed him at the forefront of the restorative justice movement, which brings together communities, offenders, and victims of crime to discuss the effects of criminal acts on the community. He speaks regularly about Corrections both nationally and internationally and is a course instructor in Restorative Justice at Queen's University.
Pierre began working with the Correctional Service of Canada in 1972 as a chaplain at Archambault Penitentiary. In 1977, he worked as chaplain at Dorchester Penitentiary and as Regional Chaplain for the Atlantic Region. In 1987, he became Director of Chaplaincy at CSC National Headquarters. From 1998 to 2001, he was the Assistant Commissioner, Correctional Operations and Programs.
As director of Chaplaincy, Dr Allard was a sponsor of several Coalition of Prison Evangelists Canadian conferences in the 90s where Bridges director first learned about Community Chaplaincy and was introduced to some significant players and ideas that were key to the founding of the society. In 1998 Pierre was the guest speaker at Bridges first annual Resorative Justice banquets and he later arranged for our director to receive Community Chaplaincy training and some seed monies during our first two years of operation. Without Dr Allard there may well have never been a Bridges to New Life Society.
Pierre Allard was, from 2001 to 2006, the Assistant Commissioner, Community Engagement for (CSC). In that capacity, he was responsible for engaging the public in ensuring the protection of society. From 1995-2005, Pierre was also the President of the International Prison Chaplains’ Association (IPCA) and was involved in the organization of three worldwide conferences.
Since retiring from the Correctional Service of Canada in 2006, Pierre is the President of a new Canadian Registered Charity. Just Equipping is committed to training/equipping prison chaplains in developing countries in the area of Restorative Justice. Just Equipping is working in Rwanda, Burundi, RD Congo and Cameroon in 2008.
